Q: What are ways my teenager can make money?
Rachel: Great question! Teenagers need to learn the value of working hard and earning their own money.
There are two different ways you can approach this as a parent.
First, you could encourage your teenager to get a job in retail or at a restaurant or someplace like that. I worked at the mall one Christmas season when I was a teenager, and I learned a lot.
When you work for someone, you learn to take direction from a leader you may or may not like, you learn about taxes and how they work, and you learn about being part of a team. All of that is really important.
The second option, which is my natural preference, is to have your teenager start their own business. They could babysit, mow lawns, do something on their own that earns money. I started babysitting pretty young because I just loved it. And I may or may not have sold my Halloween candy on the street from time to time.
My sister and I actually opened our own snack business at my dad’s office when we were teenagers. We sold snacks, sodas and water in the company break room. This taught us to keep inventory and do basic accounting. We learned how to be responsible. It was crazy at times, but it was also fun!
Bottom line: It doesn’t matter whether your teenager works for someone else or does their own thing. The key is that they do something they enjoy while making money in the process.
Hopefully, these basic pointers will help you get your teenager off on the right foot!
